Over one hundred Vietnamese tourists, who arrived on Co To Island by hydrofoil, had no means to returning because of bad weather.

Waiting in the rain

On June 22, one tourist from Hanoi, said, "This rain is making impossible to go home. I might not be able to go to work tomorrow. I`ve called the local Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. I also called the Phuc Thinh Company, who provides hydrofoil services, but they don`t seem to be able to come up with a solution yet."

According to some tourists, they bought the tickets from Phuc Thinh Company at the price of VND200,000 (USD9.5) each and arrived at Co To Island on Jun 21. Many people wanted to buy roundtrip tickets beforehand but the company refused, saying they would sell the return ticket on the island. However, no return tickets were made available.

The inspectorate of Quang Ninh Province Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism made a statement saying they were aware of the situation and have asked Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Co To Island and leaders of Phuc Thinh Company to go to the island to assist the tourists.

Tourists rent private boats

Pham Dinh Bac, Chairman of Phuc Thinh Company, said, "There were heavy rains and strong wind, making it impossible for our boats to operate. I understand the anger of our customers, but conditions have made it extremely difficult to satisfy their needs." He added that the company sent out boats this morning.

During this time, visitors took private ships and boats to return to mainland despite bad weather. Taking advantage of the situation, boat owners accepted passengers, even with overcrowded conditions, charging prices as high as VND6-8 million each.
